The picturesque Ropotamo Beach, which can only be reached on foot or by water

Ropotamo Beach is located at the mouth of the river of the same name and falls within the Ropotamo Nature Reserve, Bulgaria. In addition to the rich biodiversity, the reserve has many different sights – the Ropotamo River estuary, the Arkutino Swamp, dense forests, rock phenomena, dolmens and more, and more…

Ropotamo Beach

There are two Ropotamo beaches, western and eastern, respectively on the left and right banks of the river as it flows into the Black Sea. The eastern one is quite small and during periods of high water on the Ropotamo River it can be overwhelmed by water. The western beach is extensive. The sand is fine and golden, and the bay is quite shallow near the shore. In July, beautiful sand lilies can be seen there.

The place is wild and beautiful. On one hand, it forms its charm. On the other hand, it is also associated with some negative feeling – the many mosquitoes in the summer can bite you, even if you have sprayed yourself with repellent. I tell you this from bitter personal experience. However, I have no regrets. The beach is picturesque and generally deserted.

How to get to Ropotamo Beach

Coordinates: 42.330129, 27.757165.

The beach is located about 7 km north of the town Primorsko, Burgas region. It can only be reached on foot or by water. When we were there, there were quite a few yachts anchored in the bay with people actively sunbathing on their decks.

There are two pedestrian approaches – from Primorsko and from Arkutino Beach.

Approach from Primorsko to Ropotamo Beach

Take the road to the ancient rock sanctuary Beglik Tash, and after the turnoff for the sanctuary, continue straight a little further along the road to a barrier. There you have to leave the car and continue on foot. The road almost reaches the beach, but passing by vehicles is prohibited. It takes about half an hour.

Approach from Arkutino Beach

It is convenient to leave the car in the parking lot in front of the Arkutino swamp. The path to Ropotamo beach starts from the southeastern part of Arkutino beach, crosses Cape Kaya and then moves up and down parallel to the coast, passing through a forest. The distance between the two beaches takes about 40 minutes of walking.
