The 10 highest waterfalls in Bulgaria

From powerful free-fall plunges to several levels cascades, the highest Bulgaria’s waterfalls will fascinate any nature lover. If you’ve come across my blog before, you’ve probably noticed that I’m a passionate waterfalls enthusiast. If you have not been here, I admit it right now. My be you are also passionate about them, or at least a bit intrigued. And there is a reason – each waterfall looks different, has its own noise, way of movement and falling water. In addition, it has been scientifically proven that waterfalls have a beneficial effect on humans.

Some time ago I wrote an article about easily reachable waterfalls in Bulgaria. In this article, we will dive into the world of the highest waterfalls in Bulgaria. I arranged them in descending order. Some of those waterfalls are quite difficult to reach, but this is so normal – they are champions.

Luckily for me, I have already visited the most of those highest waterfalls in Bulgaria and I have photos and personal impressions of them. The rest are in my wishlist and I hope to fill the gaps very soon.

You may find their names a bit strange and hard to pronounce, but they all origin from Bulgarian language.

Skaklya Waterfall near Vratsa, 141 meters, Stara Planina – the highest Bulgaria’s waterfall

This is the highest waterfall in Bulgaria with its 141 meters height. Its waters fall from an impressive rock crown and can be seen from afar (when there are any). Unfortunately, the Skaklya Waterfall near Vratsa, a.k.a. Vrachanska Skaklya, is on a small river and therefore it does not “work” actively throughout the year. The most suitable periods for visiting are spring time and after heavy rains.

There is an eco-trail from the city of Vratsa to the waterfall.

Paradise Sprinkler, 125 meters, Stara Planina

The Paradise Sprinkler (Raisko Praskalo) is the highest permanent waterfall on the Balkan Peninsula. It is located below Botev peak. It can be reached in about 4 hours on a mountain trail, starting from the area of Panitsite near the town of Kalofer.

Skaklya Waterfall near Bov, 85 meters, Stara Planina

The Skaklya Waterfall near Bov (Bovska Skaklya) is located in the Iskar gorge near the village of Bov. Its river is not big either. That is why its strong days are in the spring and after heavy rains. The waterfall is the main landmark of the famous Vazov’s eco-trail.

Vidima Sprinkler, 80 meters, Stara Planina

The Vidima Sprinkler Waterfall (Vidimsko Praskalo) is on the river Praskalska in the reserve North Dzhendem. The nearest town to it is Apriltsi in Gabrovo region.

Kademliya Sprinkler Waterfall, 72 meters, Stara Planina

The Kademlya Sprinkler (Kademliysko Praskalo) Waterfall is located on the Kademliyska River, a right tributary of the Tazha River, in the Central Balkan National Park. Near the waterfall is located the hut Tazha.

Rila Skakavitsa Waterfall, 70 meters, Rila

The Rila Skakavitsa Waterfall, with its 70 meters height, is the highest waterfall in the Rila Mountains. It is located at 1750 meters above sea level, and the area around it is very beautiful. The river that feeds it is called Skakavitsa. The route to the waterfall is not difficult and is a well-marked.

Orpheus Waterfall, 68 meters, Rhodopes

The Orpheus Waterfall is the highest waterfall in the Rhodopes. It is located on the Elenska River near the city of Smolyan on the famous eco-trail “Canyon of Waterfalls”. Its waters pour from a high rock in the form of a lyre.

Pine Stone, 63 meters, Stara Planina

The Pine Stone (Borov Kamak) Waterfall is another one of the Vratsa waterfalls. The other is the Vratsa Skaklya – the first on the list. The river of the waterfall is called Leva. The waterfall is very beautiful and can be reached by an interesting and in some places extreme eco-trail. The trail starts on the outskirts of the village of Zgorigrad. In addition to the large Borov Kamak waterfall, many more beautiful waterfalls can be observed along it.

Babsko Sprinkler, 54 meters, Stara Planina

The Babsko Sprinkler (Babsko Praskalo) is another waterfall in the Central part of Stara Planina Mountains, which “works” all over the year.

Polska Skakavitsa, 52 meters, Zemen Mountains

The Polska Skakavitsa Waterfall is located near the village of the same name Polska Skakavitsa and about 10 km from the city of Kyustendil. A pleasant mountain path leads to the foot of the waterfall. It roughly takes about half an hour to reach it.
